Welcome to James Monroe High School, a family of Small Learning Communities, and home of the Vikings. As our school year opens, I would like to invite you to our campus and to encourage your active participation. Parent and community involvement, after all, are key factors to academic success. Our primary focus this year will continue to be our students. By designing the best possible school, academic program, and Small Learning Community environment for our kids, we can build on the gains we established last year and create a college going culture that will surely impact their lives in the future.

Our school is staffed by one of the finest groups of dedicated educators in the district. They are here to ensure that our students have every opportunity to excel in all academic areas and to achieve the success that they desire. Further, our teachers sponsor a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and clubs that allow students to become actively involved in school outside of the academic day.

I am proud to share with you that Monroe High School had the highest percentage increase in English Language Arts test scores in District 1 and the second highest percentage increase in math for the 2008-2009 school year. Overall, our Academic Performance Index went up 37 points last year. I would like to thank our students and faculty for their tremendous efforts that allowed such impressive gains; I know their continued dedication will help us to reach our targeted goals this year.

Our curricular program continues to evolve, designed intelligently and purposefully to meet the needs of all students. Faculty collaboration in the creation of interdisciplinary thematic units has been a key factor in the redesigning of our instructional program and in creating a sense of community identity for our students.
We offer all students the tools they need to succeed and the opportunity to make important decisions about their future. Please join us in our effort to highlight Monroe's excellence in education.

Respectfully,

J. Francisco Ayala, Principal
